The odds are even on who will win this afternoon when the varsity soccer team plays M.I.T. on Briggs Field at 3 p.m. Both teams are still looking for their second win; the Crimson booters should be hard pressed if Tech coach Ben Martin's five South American starters have a "good day."
The Yardling soccer team will meet M.I.T. on the Business School Field at 3 p.m.
The Crimson seems to have recovered somewhat from its poor showing against Dartmouth Friday. Coach Bruce Munro termed yesterday's scrimmage "the best we've had in several weeks."
Munro drilled the varsity on short, on-the-ground passing attack, blowing the whistle whenever a kick was uncontrolled and went off the ground. "Now you really look like a team," he told the players afterwards, and pointed out that they had scored more goals that afternoon than in the past two weeks, games included.
Yesterday's practice may bear fruit today, for M.I.T.'s veteran starting goal-tender, Tony Neves, received a back injury against Amherst ten days ago and is out for the rest of the season. Substitutes Peter Gero sprained his ankle last Saturday, while Bruce Murray has never played soccer before this fall.
Temperamental center forward Jose Fagarro sparks Tech's fast South American inside trio, that also boasts good wings in Mario Echart and Mike Gruenbaum.
Munro expects to start almost the same team he used against the Indians. Berk Johnson's ankle has recovered and he will play left wing, while Pete Briggs will be in the goal. Alex Haegler, who was sidelined last week with a virus infection, should see action today as a reserve halfback.
The Yardlings, undefeated until last Friday's game against Dartmouth, also face a tight contest. As in the past, the M.I.T. freshmen lack aggressiveness and lack teamwork, but boast several skillful South American forwards. Last fall the Engineers won, 3 to 2. Crimson Coach Poley Guyda will start his usual team, except that he has moved Bill Lingelbach from outside right to center halfback, replacing John Hadick, who was sidelined with a concussion.
