Carl J. Friedrich, professor of Government, expressed hope for a united European community before a crowd of over 300 in Littauer last night.
All his life, Friedrich said, he had worked and speculated on the possibility of a unified Europe. Commenting on the convening of a constitutional ad hoc assembly in Brussels, he said, "But now the days of speculation are over."
Tomorrow, this Assembly, composed of delegates from the Schuman coal and steel community, will meet for the purpose of drafting a constitution for a united European community.
Friedrich's work in this field has been in the capacity of advisor to an international committee, headed by Paul Henri Speak, Secretary General to the United Nations. The committee's job was to draw up resolutions that the Assembly will act on in the coming weeks.
If the Constitution is successfully drafted and ratified, it will cover a majority European population of over 150 million.
