Coach Myles Huntington's freshman hockey team, previously undefeated in seven starts, won its first important game yesterday afternoon, downing an undefeated Belmont Hill sextet, 4 to 3. An estimated crowd of 200 watched the afternoon game at the Arena.
Both teams went onto the ice with a 7 to 0 record. Experience, coaching, and the particular efforts of first line center Doug Manchester gave the Yardlings a slight edge throughout the game.
Captain Bob Marsolais, second line center, started the scoring at 8:25 of the first period, on a long solo run. Thirty seconds later Manchester scored number two for the Yardlings, this time on a goal-mouth pass by left wing Neddie Bliss.
In the last few seconds of the period, Belmont's Russ Kingman made an unusual score. He passed out from behind the goal, but the puck was deflected from the skate of Crimson goalie Bob Hathaway, who had moved out, into the goal.
The Belmont skaters opened the scoring at five minutes of the second period, but not through any direct efforts of their own. Hathaway cleared the puck from in front of the goal, only to have it hit the leg of wing Ed Cooney and bounce back into the goal.
Right wing Scott Coolidge took the puck all the way at 13:40 of the second period, but Belmont's Kingman tied the game early in the final period. Manchester's winning goal, three minutes before the end of the game, was a beauty. The first line center took the puck in front of his goal, skated the length of the Arena, swept in back of the Belmont cage, and then dodged out and scored.
