Jordan Denies He Sought Job at Pitt

Football coach Lloyd Jordan last night denied reports that he had conferred with Pittsburgh Athletic Director Tom Hamilton about leaving Harvard to coach at his alma mater.

Jordan, reached at the N.C.A.A. meeting in Cincinnati last night by the CRIMSON, said that he did not wish either to confirm or deny the prediction, published in yesterday's Daily Record. "Just say that I have been very happy at Harvard," the coach said.

Later, however, Jordan told the Associated Press that he had not seen or spoken to Hamilton about the vacancy left by the resignation of Len Casanova. "I understand that Tom has been interviewing candidates for the job in Pittsburgh," Jordan is reported as saying, "but I have not applied for the job. As a matter of fact, I have never applied for any job I have ever held."

The A.P. also stated late last night that the N.C.A.A. convention had become a "shopping center" for head coaches, but reported rumors that Red Dawson, assistant at Michigan State, would land the Pitt job.

Bolles in Dark

Athletic Director Tom Bolles, also at the convention, told the CRIMSON that he had been busy and had not seen Jordan for several days. Bolles denied any knowledge of the matter. The Pittsburgh papers, he said, had made no mention of it.

Meanwhile, Captain Tom Hamilton, athletic director at the University of Pittsburgh, who allegedly made Jordan the offer of the job while the two were going by train to Cincinnati, was also unavailable, although he was paged at a baseball banquet which he was supposed to be attending.

According to yesterday's published reports, there are "irreconcilable differences" between Jordan and the administration, because Jordan had been promised the athletic directorship when he came here from Amherst, and the promise was forgotten when William J. Biagham '16 resigned. There is reason to doubt this segment of the Record's report.

The Record story continues, "Harvard, officially, wants football to be a nice, genteel game played by uppercrust boys--at however, the same admission fees. He (Jordan) is saying that football should be emphasized, and re-emphasized, and not de-emphasized."

Getchell Surprised

Locally, all sources contacted expressed surprise at the predicted change. H.A.A. Business Manager Carroll Getchell said, "This comes as a surprise to me. I've spoken to Mr. Jordan many times and he seemed very happy here."

Members of Jordan's coaching staff--Joe Maras, Ted Schmitt and Josh Williams--are all with him in Cincinnati and could not be reached for comment. All are Pitt alumni. Freshman coach Bob Margarita had no comment.

Should Jordan give up his post here, indications are that the chief candidate for the post would be Margarita, assistant to Dick Harlow until he left for the head coaching job at Georgetown. When Georgetown last year gave up football for the duration, Margarita returned here as freshman coach.
