Eccentricity is not a fault at Radcliffe, but should be encouraged, claimed Vice-President Cronkhite yesterday. Mrs. Cronkhite spoke before the Radcliffe student body at the opening services of the college's 73rd year.
In college you have an opportunity to be different, even to be different, even to be eccentric, and I hope you will make the best of it," she stated. She also warned Cliffedwellers against accepting every statement their professors make. "I have heard faculty members complain that Radcliffe-students are too docile," she explained.
Dean Sherman told the students that they would be asked to give only moral support to the fund drive for Holmes Hall.
Dean Kerby-Miller in her address praised the new General Education program, which goes into effect on a full scale this year. She feels the program has three purposes: to help students to understand the world around them; to make clear the relation between the past and the present; and to serve in training the mind. She stressed that proper reading procedure should include the formation of individual ideas as well as assimilation of printed thoughts.
Maryalice McArdle, president of Student Government, urged 'Cliffedwellers to avoid even minor infractions of the school's honor system.
