Spring Gifts to University Total Near $3,000,000

Gifts to the University last spring totaled less than $3,000,000, as contributions continued to fall below the record sum of $25,000,000 raised in the academic year of 1949-50.

Figures released this week show that $2,838,000 was given to the University during April, May, and June. Of this sum, $1,755,000 was to be added to endowment with one donation amounting to $1,019,000. Given without restriction, the latter gift was an additional section of the 1946 bequest of Henry W. Putnam. The total received from his estate has now passed the $2,000,000 mark.

Another $75,000 was received from the Allston Burr estate, bringing to $1,878,000 the money received since his death. Part of this is being used to pay for the new General Education building.

Two annual scholarships have been established in the Classics Department with $40,000 from the William King Richardson estate. Mrs. Frank Knox contributed $150,000 to increase the size of the Frank Knox Scholarships, named in honor of the war-time Secretary of the Navy.

The $1,083,000 in money for immediate use included $92,000 from the American Cancer Society, $23,000 from the Carnegie Corporation, and $49,000 from the Rockefeller Foundation.
