In a championship game, Matthews South barely edged out a strong Stoughton squad, 40 to 37, in the Blockhouse yesterday, after Stoughton had led for most of the game.
The victory brought champion's laurels to the Matthews' team for the second half of the season. Since they had also won the crown during the first half, they are automatically Yard victors for the year.
Stoughton was leading by 13 points at the end of the third quarter, but in the last period, Matthews South caught fire, sinking all but three attempted baskets. Matthews tied up the game with minutes left to go. The score see-sawed for a while until Matthews got a three point lead and held it. The high-scoring centers for both teams fouled out in the last to seconds of play.
High man for the winners was Joe Oakley with 17 points to his credit. Stoughton's top scorers were Ralph Donnelley and Bob Walser, both with 11.
Meanwhile, the House basketball leagues came to a quiet close yesterday, the 'A' League winner having been decided earlier in the week. Leverett trounced Adams in both the 'A' and 'B' leagues by scores of 63 to 48, and 30 to 13, respectively. High scorer in the 'A' league for the Bunnies was Monk Meyers with 14 tallies.
House squash also saw action yesterday as it neared the season's last game. Dunster beat Kirkland 4 to 1 in both the A and B leagues. Eliot took Adams 3 to 2 in the A league and 3 to 1 in the B. In the latter matches, both teams defaulted in the last game. Winthrop and Leverett didn't complete their matches, the former was ahead 2 to 1 in the A and tied 2 to 2 in the B. The matches will be finished today, closing the season.
In House 'A' basketball, the year's end finds Kirkland in top position with ten wins and four losses. There is a three-way tie for second place between Eliot, Leverett, and Lowell, each having nine wins and five losses. Winthrop holds fifth position with eight and six, while Dunster is sixth with six and eight. Dudley has a four and ten record to take the seventh spot, and Adams, with one and thirteen is on the bottom. 'B' league results have not yet been tabulated.
