Adams House Offers Good Food, Swimming Pool, Nearness to Yard

Vacancies for freshmen: 91.

Rooms for freshmen: two and three-man suites, mostly triples.

Price range of places for freshmen: $110 to $125 per term.

Look around you. If you see an upperclassman who has a well-fed, rested look, chances are he's from Adams.

Why well-fed?--because orange-onion salads and other gastronomic specialities come his way as a steady diner at Harvard's most popular eating establishment. Rested?--because his House is nearer the Yard than any other.

Adams is divided into three living units. Westmorly and Randolph are remnants of the early 20th century gold Coast. They feature the twilight luxury of large, high-ceilinged rooms and the out-dated Victorian living that provides a bathtub, but no shower.

C-entry, the new part of the House, was built in 1932 and resembles the new Houses with showers but, no bathtub, C-entry's rooms are small, and House unity suffers because there are just two rooms on each stair landing.

Sandwiched between architectural contrasts are two common rooms, and a library known for its large history and economics sections, and for the College's finest jazz record collection.

Seeks Balanced Group

Housemaster David M. Little '18 looks for no single quality, other than reasonable academic competence, when reviewing applications. He seeks a balanced group, able to contribute to the life of the House "in its broadest aspects," rather than a "type." The number of high school men slightly exceeds the number from prop schools.

Though Adams has neither landscaped grounds nor riverside vistas, it is the only House with its own swimming pool. In addition, six Linden Street squash courts are reserved for the Gold Coasters.

Intramural teams are fairly well-manned, although Adams in recent years has seldom been outstanding.

In extra-curricular circles, the Adams House Musical Society, with a large and active membership, has consistently undertaken some of the most ambitious musical programs in Cambridge.

Tutorial-sponsored language tables in French and Spanish, and an annual student-tutor softball game further the informal relationship of House members and faculty.

Parietal regulations in Adams House appeal to the undergraduate. Instead of signing guests in and out with the superintendent, students fill out cards and deposit them in C-entry. The emphasis is on voluntary cooperation rather than fear-inspired compliance.
