Jordan Is Likely Successor With Boston Probable Coach

By Herbert S. Meyers

Lloyd Paul Jordan will move up in the Athletic Association hierarchy to fill the position left vacant by the resignation of William J. Bingham '16, reliable sources revealed last night.

These sources further claimed that Jordan's first official act, once he takes office is July, will be to name Clarence E. "Chief" Boston '39 head football coach. Boston coached J.V. football here and is now head coach at New Hampshire. Another move will be the replacement of Henry Lamar as freshman coach.

The reasoning behind these statements goes this way: Jordan gave up a 17 year job as coach and athletic director at Amherst for an insecure position at Harvard. He is no longer a young man and the possibility of his taking so risky a coaching job, on the chance that he might win seems unlikely.

Quick to Learn

The rumor, when Jordan took over at Harvard was that he was being groomed for the position of Director of Athletics here. However, a couple of years would be required to acquaint him with the Harvard setup. The reports say that Jordan learned fast.

A further fact which has delayed the Jordan appointment was that the University did not want it to appear that it was ousting Bingham under pressure. Bingham, now 60, had been looking for a chance to move into something a little easier for the last three years. The necessity of a special aid to the Provost on athletics was obvious, and Bingham has long been marked for the job.

Boston's position in the new setup is also explained by the same sources. Last spring Boston had four conferences with Jordan. The possibility of Jordan's becoming Director of Athletics was considered, but Boston did not want to serve as assistant coach under another man.

The gentlemen parted in harmony, and since then Boston has refused to be considered for the Brown and Stanfard coaching jobs. his New Hampshire team was undefeated this season, but it is well known that he'd still like to come back to Harvard, where his jayvees won 15 straight after the war.

Lamar's Status

Henry Lamars position is also in flux. It is well known that men were interviewed for the freshman coaching job during the recent coaches conference. Many letters of inquiry about the job have appeared recently in the university mails. Jordan was offered the opportunity of setting Lamar loose last spring, but withheld action. It appears that he has now changed his mind.

Vague Relations

Henry Lamar's position is also in flux. athletics and Bingham is not known. Where Bingham's committee is supposedly advisory, the director of athletics is responsible for all intercollegiate sports, for intramural sports, and for the freshman physical training program.

In addition to this, the new director will continue to be responsible to the Provost for administering of the budget for athletics and the development, scheduling, and fielding of teams in all major and minor intercollegiate sports.
