Everything but the basketball fell apart at the seams last night as the varsity basketball team lost to Cornell, 73 to 44, at the Indoor Athletic Building.
The Ithacans were fast and precise, scoring most of their points from right under the basket. Fine rebounding by Walt Ashbaugh, Fred Eydt, and Paul Gorwin kept the ball in the Big Red's possession. After compiling an amazing 54 percent shooting average, the visitors walked off the floor with a 44 to 18 half-time lead.
The Crimson was foiled in the first half by a tight Cornell defense. Captain Ed Smith, guarded by from two to four opposing players, was almost helpless in the pivot. Only the shooting of Jim Gabler, who scored nine points, kept the Crimson in the game during the first 20 minutes.
In the second half, a Crimson combination of Gabler, Dick Lionette, Forrest Hansen, Gerry Murphy, and Ambie Redmond succeeded in slowing up the Big Red.
The Yardlings, who did not play last night, travel to Exeter this afternoon.
