For the first time since the war, the varsity basketball team will not make a Christmas trip this season, it was learned last night.
Harvard Athletic Association business manager Carroll F. Getchell said that the trip was dropped because a suitable schedule could not be arranged. Officers from a number of colleges had been received, but no trip which would pay for itself could be worked out.
There is no connection between the current basketball scandals and the dropping of the trip, Getchell said. H.A.A. officials are already working on a possible Christmas trip to Michigan State next year.
It was hoped that the team would make the trip of Michigan State this year, as it did in the 1949-50 season. In 1949, Cornell and Harvard were selected to represent the East and Michigan State and Ohio State the West. This year, however, Princeton and Dartmouth were invited to be the Eastern representatives.
Reaction among team members was varied last night, with some players expressing disappointment while others seemed just as pleased to be also to spend the holidays at home.
Last year, the team played Bradley, Washington University of St. Louis, Denison (o.), and Chicago. The varsity won, 48 to 39, over Chicago, for its only victory of the trip.
There was a feeling among the squad last year that part of its poor showing was due to an excess of travelling. That is why the H.A.A. was particularly anxious to schedule a tournament-type trip, such as at Michigan State, where the varsity would play most of its games on one floor.
