The University and two nearby girls' colleges have more than doubled a record collection of blood for the New England area, announced co-chairmen of the Phillips Brooks drive Joseph Cataldo '53, Phillip D. Levin '53, and Thomas H. Petschek '53, this Wednesday.
The former record was also a Harvard one set here last spring. The co-chairmen reported that as against the 1,445 who signed up then, 3,017 had done so this time.
On the basis of the spring figure, the co-chairmen originally set a target this fall of 2,000. Ten days ago, when they saw now the College had "really come through" they added on the extra thousand.
A breakdown for the University's 3,017 total showed the College leading with 2,018. Then came the graduate schools with 535. Radcliffe with 258, Lesley with 75, Sargent with 70, and the Episcopal Theological School with 61.
Petschek, when interviewed, pointed out that many students who sign up, do not give blood when the time comes. For instance, last spring 1,455 students signed up but only 963 donated. Some just defaulted while others, under 21, found they couldn't get parents consent.
Even so, Petschek hopes that when blood-letting starts this December 3, the drive will not well over 2,000 pints.
