Football coach Lloyd Jordan said yesterday that Yale made "a terrific mistake" by dropping spring football practice. The Yale Athletic Association announced the cut last Monday.
Jordan said, "As a football coach, I would appreciate having spring practice. But I will go along with any policy adopted here." So far, there has been no official word on spring practice here from Athletic Director Tom Bolles.
"I think it's wise to restrict spring training." Jordan added, "so as not to let it get out of hand. But I think it's good for the boys and doesn't hurt the game.
"I think all this talk about doing away with it is just a smoke screen," he concluded.
Players Give Opinions
Captain Warren Wylie said that "spring practice is definitely an asset to the coach and to the team, especially as far as getting a line on the freshmen is concerned."
Defensive halfback Dustin Burke felt that playing football in both the spring and fall was "too much for a man who wants to play other sports."
The announcement came as a surprise to the rest of the Ivy colleges. Brown's athletic head, Paul MacKesey said he didn't even know such a move was under consideration. Cornell indicated that it will still hold spring practice, and Dartmouth and Princeton would make no comment on the plan.
