Eighty freshman football candidates, hailing from such towns as Salinas, California and Exeter, New Hampshire, and most points in between, reported to coach Henry Lamar for first workouts Friday.
A cold, driving rain hampered the practice, but Lamar sent the large squad through intensive drills on the Crowther apparatus and over the rope maze.
Howard Houston, 1949 varsity captain and now freshman line coach, helped Lamar put the Yardlings through their paces. Besides working with the mechanical appartus, the candidates spent half an hour with the blocking dummies.
Fred Horween, son of former Crimson star Ralph Horween, and nephew of ex-coach Arnold Horween, looked good in the blocking workout. Bob Picard, chunky all-state lineman from Lowell, also was impressive.
Backfield action was limited to running practice and starts. Earl Trucker, all-Minneapolis back, Dick Clasby, Bill Frate, and Warren O'Donnell, all with outstanding prep-school records, are candidates for starting positions. O'Donnell is a brother of Cleo and Ken, former Crimson captains.
