In the old days, says cross-country coach Jaakko Mikkola, almost 100 men would report for pre-season workouts. This year, though, he will consider himself lucky to have 40 candidates from which to assemble a squad. Practice won't start until Monday, so Mikkola will have less than three weeks to get the team in shape for its first meet, October 13, with Holy Cross and Rhode Island State. Last year, Mikkola's team didn't win a match in seven tries.

Pankey and Gregory

John Pankey, team captain, and one of the mainstays of last year's squad, will be back. Dave Gregory is also a big man in Mikkola's plans. Gregory is possibly the best cross-country man in the College. He captained the freshman team two years ago, and starred on last year's club.

The freshman picture is still unsettled. Mikkola says that about 20 men have indicated an interest in cross-country, but that he needs more, either with or without experience.
