Ira Godin turned in a brilliant four hit performance yesterday afternoon at Fitton Field in Worcester and the varsity baseball team won its first shutout game of the season, defeating Holy Cross, 5 to 0. It was the fourth successive victory for the Crimson and the sixth in seven starts.
The victory was the second over Holy Cross in the last six years and the first time in almost a decade that the Crimson was able to sweep the annual two game series.
Godin had the game under control all the way. Fanning six while walking only three, he showed more control than he has all season, and scattered the four Crusader hits over a like number of innings.
Matt Forman, Holy Cross mounds man who was credited with both Cross decisions over Harvard last year, went eight innings before he was relieved by Dick Shellenbach. Forman limited the Crimson to eight his stint on the mound and was responsible for all the runs.
It was the first time this year that the Crimson played errorless ball, a feat which it had been threatening at all season. Johnny White and Myles Huntington turned in their most impressive efforts so far, coming up with several tough plays on slowly bounding balls.
White also shared batting honors with Bennie Akillian and Eddie Foynes. Foynes, who continued to play with the bruised heel which has been bothering him for the last three weeks, got two hits including a single and a triple.
The Crimson hit safely in six innings, but it didn't score the first run until the fifth. Tom Cavanaugh led off the inning with a single into short center and was advanced to second on Godin's sacrifice bunt. He moved on to third on Foynes' infield out and then scored as Jim Porter mishandled Johnny White's smash to short.
Two more tallies were added in the seventh when Goodie led off with a single to right and then scored on Foynes' triple to deep left center. Foynes scored a moment later when the shortstop throw wild to the catcher as the Crusaders attempted to catch Godin.
The scoring was concluded in the next inning. Akillian got a hold of one of Formans' fast balls and lashed it to center. Huntington advanced Akillian when Forman tried to make the play at third, failing on a late throw. Both hands were safe. Akillian scored when Cavanaugh's double play ball ended up in right field. Foynes got credit for his second run batted in when his single scored Huntington.
