H.Y.R.C. Supports H.L.U. In Sponsorship of Panels

In a letter to the Young Republican Club yesterday, the Liberal Union agreed to cooperate with the former organization in establishing an H.L.U. H.Y.R.C. joint forum to which leading Democratic and Republican speakers would be invited to debate controversial issues.

Donald W. Dowd '51, president of the H.L.U., wrote the H.Y.R.C. that "your meetings this year, at which Senators Styles Bridges (R.N.H.) and Owen Brewster (R.Mc.) spoke, would have been indeed politically enlightening had speakers been invited to uphold a liberal point of view.

"Republican and liberal points of view," he continued, "were contrasted in 1932, 1936, 1940, 1944, and 1948. The H.L.U. feels that continued contrast of Republican and liberal views will prove equally educational."

After receiving the H.L.U. letter Gordon L. Poole '49, president of the H.Y.R.C., said that he was "very happy to see that the H.L.U. has accepted our proposal. Like the Lincoln-Douglas debates on slavery," he continued, "I'm sure the forums will prove very enlightening."

Committees Will Meet

Poole stated that committees from the two organizations would soon convene in order to discuss possible topics and speakers for the debates, which will be held next fall.

Results of the H.L.U. elections for new officers were also disclosed last night. C. William Chastain '52 will succeed Dowd as president, while Richard K. Berg '51, Walter C. Carrington '52, and Walker La Brunerie, Jr. '51 will fill the posts of vice-president, treasurer, and secretary, respectively.

Allyn O. Kreps '52 is the new head of the political action committee, William J. Adelson '51 will lead the Harvard affairs committee, and John T. White '52 will supervise public relations. Members at large are John H. Sutter '52, Hugh Schwartzberg '53, LeRoy W. Huntington, Jr. '53, Stephen J. Seligman '52, and Joel Mandelhaum '53.
