Lacrosse Team Ties Springfield After Two Overtime Periods, 8-8

By Bayley F. Mason

The varsity lacrosse team lived up to its pre-game even matching with Springfield by playing the Indians to an 8 to 8 tie Saturday afternoon on the Business School Field. Bill Plissner, Crimson attackman, broke a 7 to 7 deadlock in the first overtime period, but Springfield scored in the second overtime to prevent the varsity from taking its second league victory.

Both teams played some fine lacrosse despite the weekly Cambridge deluge which shrunk the rawhide webbings of the sticks. Though a heavier team, Springfield hold its own by playing a faster break and clearing better than the varsity.

Crimson Trails at Half

Springfield's speed was particularly damaging in the first period when it took a 4 to 1 lead. The Crimson, displaying better individual stickwork, countered with three goals in eight minutes and trailed only 5 to 6 at the half.

Neither team did much in the third period except wade through the mud. Some clever playmaking by the first midfield and attackman Rick Hudner, coupled with two fast scoring shots by Plissner enabled the Crimson to dominate the last period and grab a 7 to 6 lead with two minutes left.

Harvard appeared certain of a win until Springfield's full-blooded Indian, Jack Patterson, bounced the tying goal off the stick of goalie Sid Clark. Clark was also the victim of another freak shot earlier in the game when a scuffle in front of the cage sent several mud pellets, one of which was the ball, flying into the goal.

First period: Davidson (Yost), Patterson (S), Garber (S), Patterson (Garber) (S), Hunter (Waldron) (S), Yost, Birdsall. Second period: Hudner, Graham (Plissner), Hunter (S), Patterson (S). Third period: No Score. Fourth Period: Plissner (Baldwin), Plissner (Hudner), Patterson (Hunter) (S). First overtime: Plissner. Second overtime: Garber (S).
