Nine Plays Cornell in Ivy League Opener Today

The Ivy League season opens for the varsity baseball team today when Cornell comes to Soldiers Field at 3:45 p.m. The Big Red is second in League standings.

Cornell coach Roy Green has a team which is strong in the field and at bat. In addition to its 14-inning League victory ever Pennsylvania, the team has defeated Navy. 4 to 0, in a non-League game, and Fordham, a club which had beaten both Yale and Princeton.

Green has not named his pitching choice yet, but it is probable that Spike Gerwin, who went all the way against Penn, will start. Tom Turner, John Maloney, and Buzz Hammer, three capable relief men, will be held in reserve.

Left-hander Barry Turner, the only Crimson winner this year, will start for Stuffy McInnis. In his only game, against Holy Cross. Turner showed great improvement in control over last year, walking only one man.

The Crimson infield, which started out weakly against Boston College, has played consistently fine ball in its last two outings, committing no errors. Tom Cavanaugh on second base is the only man in the infield who has over played his position before in college ball, since Caulfield is a converted outfielder, Huntington has been shifted from second, and Johnny White is new to the squad.

Benny Akillian has recovered from his injured finger and will be ready for action this afternoon. Charlie Walsh, who had replaced him in the outfield after the game with Boston College, broke a bone in his hand sliding into third Tuesday, and will be out for at least three weeks. In the BC game Akillian got two hits for four times at bat.

Due to a misprint in yesterday's CRIMSON the pitching records for the season were listed incorrectly. Although Godin has been defeated in both outings he has an earned run average of 2.40, leading the team in this department. Godin has pitched 15 innings, striking out 12 and walking eight.
