Tutorial Groups, House Deans May Receive Approval

Group tutorial and deans for each House appeared probable yesterday with the release of a letter from Provost Buck discussing some of the College's major projects. Buck's message was sent to 40,000 College alumni this week, together with class agents' appeals for gifts to the Harvard Fund.

Buck said that a new program, now being worked on by Dean Bender and a faculty committee, would realize the full potential of the House plan by providing "individual contact between faculty and students in small instruction groups." He added that new plans call for decentralizing the "methods for aiding students with academic problems."

$50,000 Annual Cost

The new program Buck estimated, will cost $50,000 annually, when it reaches maturity.

In his letter, Buck also estimated the 1950 operating cost of the new Student Activity Center as $10,000. He said that the additional cost, resulting from the new Financial Aid Center, will also be $10,000.

Buck's letter stated that the College intended to add $50,000 in free funds to the scholarship budget in 1951. He added that the College intended to continue to offer financial aid to at least 20 percent of the incoming freshmen.

The Provost also mentioned the General Education program as another phase of the College needing alumni support.

The College is in sound financial condition, Buck said, and no gifts to the Harvard Fund will be used to offset operating deficits.
