As tennis coach Jack Barnaby put it, "This spring we took some pretty hard knocks, but we had fun and most of all we learned a lot." The nine man trip squad has just returned to Cambridge after completing a rigorous schedule of five matches in six days, in which it compiled a record of one win and four losses.

A strong Davidson College team gained a 9-0 victory over the Crimson on Monday while North Carolina took two, 12-1 on Tuesday and 13-0 Wednesday. The lone Harvard win of the first three days came when the North Carolina number three man dislocated his knee and was forced to default his match. Both North Carolina and Davidson boasted nationally ranked players in the high positions with competent, experienced amateurs lower down.

The team played its first league match Thursday against Navy and lost, 8-1. With most of Navy's '49 team intact, the only Harvard win was Captain Hilliard Hughes' victory in straight sets over Haynesworth, in the number two position.

The Army match on Saturday was a different story. Playing on a low-ceiling indoor converted cement hockey rink, the Crimson came from behind to take a close 5-4 decision. With the score tied at four-all, the first doubles team of Broward Craig and Hughes dropped the first set before rallying to take the final two to decide the match.

Craig, Hughes, Dave Gordon, and Bob Bramhall turned in the other four victories playing numbers one, two, five, and six singles, respectively.
