David Lyman Smith '51 of Kensington Maryland, and Winthrop House was yesterday named captain of next year's varsity wrestling team, while at the same time the fencers chose as their leader Winfred "Joe" Overholser, Jr. '51 of Washington, D.C., and Dunster House.
Smith was undefeated in 136-lb, dual competition this year, although he was tied once. The New England AAU champion at 145 lbs., Smith will compete in two weeks at the Nationals on Long Island. He succeeds Bob Claflin.
Overholser Replaces Frankman
Overholser, who competes in the epee, succeeds Ray Frankman as captain of the fencers. Last week Overholser reached the finals in the Intercollegiate Fencing Association meet in New York. He placed fifth out of six in the individual competition for the epee championship.
Overholser was on the fencing varsity for the first time this year, although he competed for the Crimson as a freshman. His record in the epee was the best for the entire team. Against Yale this month, he won all of his three matches.
