Denied Winter Campus Housing, International Students Scramble to Find Alternative Options
Wholesale deconversion has been postponed for at least one term, Dean Watson announced last night. With a few minor exceptions, all Houses will operate on the same numerical level they are now on through next fall.
In revealing the decision of the housemasters Dean Watson stated that the administration wished to place as many men in the Houses as they could possibly could. This will mean that the Houses will continue to operate on the present system of 145 percent of their normal quotas.
Simultaneous to this announcement, vice-President Reynolds declared that there will be no change in the basic room rents.
Upperclassmen Out of Yard
In accordance with the new policy all upperclassmen will be moved out of the Yard, other into Houses or the Outhouses between the Yard and Mt. Auburn Street.
This will mean an increase of approximately 100 students over the present Outhouse population, while the freshman dorms will accomodate only 130 percent of their regular number.
In the proposed plan for 1950-51 occupancy, 81.8 percent of a total enrollment of 4700 undergraduates will be expected to "live in." Of this number 2930 are eligible for House rooms. This group will be divided into 2671 men in the Houses and 259 in the temporary dorms. The remaining 917 freshmen will live in the usual Yard dormitories.
Although room rates will stay the same as they now are, no change is expected in the biddy service. Irving B. Parkhurst, Director of Buildings and Grounds, said yesterday that it was "improbable" that the University would advocate a five day week for the maids.
