Hockey Team Crushes Tech, 14 to 2

Two men made auspicious beginnings in Harvard hockey last night as the varsity opened its season with a 14 to 2 win over a hapless M.I.T. equal at the Garden.

John White, Better Known as a football and baseball player, scored three goals and set up three others to lead the attack and help start Coach Coney Weiland's initial Harvard season with a victory. It was White's first hockey game for the Crimson.

White's second line took care of most of the scoring. Right wing Bob Di Blasio scored four goals, and left wing Nat Harris one. Starting center Joe Kittredge scored three times, with Half Marshall getting two goals, and Captain Low Preston one.

The scoring started early, and continued until the end, easing off briefly during the second period. Tech just didn't have the speed to stop the Crimson attack. Only fine goaltending by Burt Woodward kept the score below 20.

And a tight Harvard defense, combined with Tech's slowness, stopped and M.I.T. drive before it had fairly started. Bill Bliss was the outstanding man on the Crimson back line. In addition to breaking up the Tech attack plays, he moved the puck well, and assisted on two of the early goals.

The second line counted at least once during each of the first four times it was on the ice. White scored the first goal at 2:29 of the first period, assisted by Bliss and Harris. Fifteen seconds later. Harris punched home a pass out from DiBlasio.

DiBlasio and White worked a pretty pass play for the third point at 9:40, and then White combined with Harry Sedgwick to set up DiBlasie again at 16:11. After just 42 seconds, White took a pass from Bliss and Flipped one in from a tough angle.

Play slowed after White scored his third goal, at 3:28 of the second period. The Crimson was penalized two minutes at 13:34 for having too many players on the ice and sixteen second later Paul Grady sank a close in shot to ruin sophomore goalie Nate Corning's near shutout.

Kittredge got that one back with the prettiest goal of the night, stickhandling through the whole Tech team to score at 16:09.

Marshall and Kittredge reciprocated on pass plays to make the Crimson total nine before the third period was four minutes old and at 4:27 DiBlasic broke away for his third score. He, Marshall, and Kittredge scored again within two minute at the middle of the period. Then Jim Russell sent a screen shot past Corning for the last Tech goal.
