1954 Football Squad Elects Tailback Clasby as Captain

The freshman football team yesterday elected Richard John Clasby '54, of Natick and Mower Hall, captain.

Clasby, a tailback, has been the Yardlings' outstanding ground-gainer. He has scored two touchdowns, both on runs of over 40 yards. Clasby is the team's punter, too. He also passes, though in the unbalanced T-formation the freshmen use he is rarely called upon to throw.

Coach Henry Lamar said he was pleased with the team's choice. "Clasby is a hard competitor; he'll be a good captain," he said.

High School Star

Clasby was an all-State quarterback at Natick High, then went to Trinity Pawling Academy, where he was converted into a halfback. He also won all-State honors playing center for Natick's hockey team. In addition, he caught for the baseball team, and ran the 440 on the track squad.

When Clasby cuts loose, he is a very difficult man to catch. His running is hard and he reverses, fast. This speed, along with his passing, is expected to step up the Yardling offense.
