Group To Seek Investigation Of Cambridge City Council

Charles R. Allen, associate director of the Francis Sweeny Committee, said yesterday that he will start an investigation of the Cambridge City Council because of recent legislation on "Reducators" which names 68 faculty members as Communist sympathizers; he will take all possible steps to publicize the results.

At the same time, City Councillor John D. Lynch announced that he will resume his drive to "get Communists out of the city administration and out of Harvard."

The Francis Sweeny Committee, first organized to fight the Christian Front Movement, is a nation-wide organization which does research into the activities of "nationalistic, anti-Semitic, and Red-baiting organizations," according to Allen. The group has many publicity channels, he says, such as Drew Pearson and, in this area, The Boston City Reporter.

The legislation passed by the Cambridge City Council first came to Allen's attention through Harvard friends. Allen said that he has many friends at Harvard who have lent support to his organization. Among them he says, are Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr. '38, associate professor of History, Arthur M. Schlesinger, professor of History, and Gordon W. Allport '19, professor of Psychology.

The Francis Sweeny Committee is an endowed group. Allport said that he thought that Allen "should be commended as a citizen because of his work."

When informed of the investigation, Councillor Lynch said that he did not "know a damn thing about the group." But he added that he would do everything to prevent the investigation. "The im- portant thing now is to got the reds out of the city, that means even out of the city administration, where I know there are a lot of Communists, and, of course, out of Harvard."

Asked why he brought up the issue again, Lynch said that he thought the "City Selictor is negligent" since he has not given an opinion on Lynch's Communist registration bill and the "Reducators" list.

Lynch said that he will force the City Solicitor to give a legal opinion on the two bills at Monday's Council session
