Speech by McWilliams Banned in California

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

On February 27, Carey McWilliams, a free-lance writer who contributes frequently to The Nation, was scheduled to address the Teachers Institute in Riverside, California. It was National Brotherhood Week; McWilliams had a suitable topic for the occasion.

His speech was cancelled, however, on the insistence of the local American Legion post. McWilliams spoke in Riverside anyway--at a meeting called on May 16 to protest the Legion's action.
