Amherst, the team Stuffy McInnis did wonders with last spring will try to beat its former coach this afternoon when it visits Soldiers Field for a 3:45 p.m. game.
Filling in for Paul Eckley at the Western Massachusetts school last season, McInnis fashioned a team that won ten games and lost only to Yale. The Lord Jeffs liked McInnis so well they voted him an honorary member of the Class of 1948.
Now Eckley is back at the helm of another fine Amherst team, bent on spoiling today's Old Home Week festivities. The Jeffs play mostly schools of their own size (about a thousand students), which includes EIBL-leading Dartmouth. Amherst has beaten the Indians twice in the last two years. Its 1949 record is 9-1.
Veteran Lineup
The Jeff lineup includes six seasoned men who played for McInnis, including hard-hitting Captain Ivar Rosendale, who has batted in 12 runs. Left-hander Charlie Murphy, Amherst's top hurler with a 4-1 record, will pitch, which means that John Caulfield and Herb Neal will probably play left and right fields with a southpaw on the mound.
Barry Turner will oppose Murphy and try to check a club which has exploded for 12, 16, 16, and 22 runs in four sundry games. Harvard, generally unstable at the start of the season, seems headed in the right direction for the home stretch but is still somewhat unpredictable.
