Garber Privately Tells Faculty That Harvard Must Rethink Messaging After GOP Victory
It will be curtain time on the Charles this afternoon for Bert Haines' 150 crew as well as for four other Crimson lightweight boats which open their seasons with dual races against MIT today.
Two freshman boats race at 3 p.m., followed by two Jayvee boats at 3:30 p.m. and by the varsity lightweights at 4 p.m. All boats will be rowing the Henley distance of a mile and five-sixteenths.
Weight Requirement Dropped
The races this afternoon are actually billed as "practice" races, and as a result neither team is obligated to make weight. But next Saturday, when Harvard and MIT go at it again, the weight requirement will be enforced.
In the varsity race, the Crimson will definitely be the favorite. In the slides will be two lettermen and six men from last year's exceptional freshman boat. This combination seems a sure bet to beat the Engineers, whose laboratory hours take a big cut out of practice time.
The outcome of the other two races is less certain, although again Harvard holds the big advantage of ample practice behind it. Entered in the jayvee race is the crew stroked by Jerry Wells, a boat which hasn't been far behind the Jack Smith-stroked varsity in practice sprints this spring.
The 150-lb. boatings:
Varsity: Smith, stroke; Barrett, 7; Potter, 6; Clark, 5; Grosvenor, 4; Bordman, 3; Menslage, 2; Allen, bow; Osborne, cox.
First jayvees: Wells, stroke; MacTaggart, 7; Roosevelt, 6; Decker, 5; Marston, 4; Barnhill, 3; Bolman, 2; Watson, bow; Chadwick, cox.
Second jayvees: Evarts, stroke; Kruse, 7; McWilliams, 6; Landergan, 5; Pleus, 4; Hermann, 3; Keane, 2; McVicker, bow; Gazaway, cox.
First freshmen: Flagg, stroke; Watkins, 7; House, 6; Morgan, 5; Benson, 4; Holden, 3; Beggs, 2; Mitchell, bow; Gordon, cox.
Second freshmen: St. George, stroke; Abeles, 7; Milne, 6; Flerlage, 5; Murdoch, 4; McDonough, 3; Miller, 2; Gillies, bow; Crocker, cox.
