A three man lateral play covering some 25 yards resulted in a touch (down) shortly after the start of the second half and rave the Rugby Club a 3 to 0 victory over McGill University Saturday afternoon in the resumption of a rivalry which has lain dormant for 57 years.
Despite the high wind and low temperature which prevailed on Solders Field, about 500 clean cut and mildly-cheering fans looked on in complete amazement.
The score came when Al key picked up a ball kicked back from a scrum and pitched out to another three-quarter back, Sam Adams. Adams ran to within 15 yards of the goal line, when, finding himself hemmed in by McGill players on all sides, he lateraled to Al Green who just made it over the line before being hit by two McGill players. Green was slightly shaken up on the play.
Canadians Smaller
The smaller, shiftier Canadian team made two main scoring bids and seemed to have the better of things in the first half, when the wind was at their backs.
Early in the first half, Eddie Davis got possession of a loose ball a scant four inches from the Crimson goal line to quell one McGill rally, and time ran out when the Canadians threatened to tie it up in the final minutes.
The Crimson was stopped from scoring three times by the aggressive McGill defense. Twice Sam Adams was flattened short of the goal line when as many as five defenders ganged him, and a field goal attempt by Hollis French after the touchdown missed, due primarily to difficult angle.
The Harvard lineup: forwards--Manning-Smith, Travis, Boucher, Schoch, Gilbert, Carey, Soriano, Davis; backs--McIntyre, French, Adams, Key, Densmore, Eaton, Green.
