Southern Trip Opens for 20 Lacrossemen

Like most varsity teams, the lacrosse squad in going south on a tour this vacation, but unlike the others, it is not going to the South. Baltimore is the southern limit of the tour and Hoboken, N.J. is the northern terminus.

Maryland may not have any orange trees, but it doesn't have many snow drifts, either, and teams like Navy and Maryland scarcely bother to go indoors in wintertime. When you consider that lacrosse down there has the ideological significance of football at Michigan, that little toddlers play lacrosse in kindergarten practically, you can see what Coach Bruce Munro's team is up against.

The spring trip begins on Monday against Pennsylvania, which fortunately isn't in the fanatic belt. Navy meets the varsity on Wednesday, and tosses the remains on to Maryland for a Friday game.

The next day the varsity scoots quickly to Stevens Institute in Hoboken, for what is hoped will be a breather, although no one knows anything about the state of Hoboken lacrosse. After this game on Saturday the team returns home, tired but happy.

But all is not gloomy. The team has had two weeks of outdoor practice, instead of last year's four days, and is in much better condition. Munro has run two hard scrimmages this week and selected a twenty-man traveling team of five attackmen, nine midfielders, four defensemen, and two goalies.

Although Munro has not committed himself to a starting team, he has a pretty solid group in yesterday's scrimmage unit: Dick Bezansan, Hans Estin, and Lew Soult at attack; Willie Davis, Ed Thayer, and Dave Waring at midfield; Captain Bob Forsyth, Dick Hansen, and Don Page at defense; and Algy Allen in the goal.

The traveling unit includes, besides the prospective starters above, Paul Birdsall, Sid Clark, Fred Coburn, Paul Davidson, Bill Graham, Rick Hudner, Bill Kegg, Bob Lange, Bill Plissner, Dick Post, and Manager Porky Barg.
