A smouldering sofa filled Lowell F-21 with choking billows of smoke at 1:15 a.m. today, bringing 11 fire engines and 75 students to the scene. The engines formed a virtual cordon around Lowell.
Alan F. Winslow '47 first smelled the fire, but found the smoke too heavy to battle. He returned a minute later with some friends, sprayed extinguishers, and began tossing the sofa out the window before someone called the firemen.
In the adjoining bedroom, meanwhile, roommates Donald F. Winslow '50 and John F. Woolvarton '50 slept through it all.
