The varsity hockey team, blessed with some 15 men of better than average ability, extended itself only slightly at the Arena yesterday afternoon and shellacked an eager but mediocre MIT squad, 13 to 6. In the preliminary engagement the freshman whipped their BU counter-parts 11 to 5.
The vim and vigor displayed by the Engineers in the opening period temporarily baffled the varsity and accounted for a 5 to 4 edge briefly enjoyed by MIT. But in the second and third periods the Crimson outskated, outpassed, outshot, and outwitted MIT, scored nine goals and would have scored more had not Scott Connor played so well in the Tech goal. Connor had an unofficial total of 42 saves.
Tom Moseley and Lew preston looked especially good for the Crimson in the slow-paced game, and Don Lea glittered for the hapless down-river sextet.
A record low crowed of about 150 persons was on hand to enjoy the proceedings.
The varsity scoring: First period--Lea, MIT, (Walworth) 7:56; Lea, MIT, (Grady) 8:33; Moseley, Harvard, (Huntington) 9:00; Kittredge, Harvard, 12:11; Garrity, Harvard, (Preston) 15:42; Preston, Harvard, (Garrity, Greeley) 16:01; Hamilton, MIT, 16:10; Lea, MIT, (Walworth) 17:14; Walworth, MIT, (Fuller) 18:09.
