Hoyas Hand Quintet Second Defeat

Georgetown Topples Varsity, 58 to 53, as 3800 Fans Look On

By Paul W. Mandel

Thirty eight hundred fans at Washington's National Guard Armory watched the varsity basketball team drop its second game Saturday night, 58 to 53. In its first road match this year, the quintet had traveled south to meet Georgetown, and the undefeated Hoyas produced their fifth straight win.

The varsity rehashed its Navy game, allowing Georgetown to pile up a 31 to 18 lead by the half, and failing to make a second period drive pay off. The Hoyas put two tell men on John Rockwell and Ed Smith, who have been doing most of the scoring for the varsity, and forced it to shoot from outside.

Rockwell Slumps

For the first time this year, Rockwell failed to come through with more than 15 points, while Smith was similarly handcuffed. Smith led the team's scoring with four goals and a pair of free throws.

Norm Shepard's intensive drilling on foul shots, which had given the quintet a better than .70 free throw average going into Saturday's game, failed to game through against Georgetown. The varsity dropped in only nine of its 21 fouls, while Georgetown made 14 for 23.

Shepard used his entire road gang of ten men, frequently spelling his usual starting line-up of Rockwell, Smith, Bill Hickey, Jim Gabler, and Gerry Murphy. Cliff Grosby equalled Smith by producing four baskets.

Georgetown's attack was led by a pair of fast forwards, Tommy O'Keefe and John Brown. The Hoyas played a tight defense, and held the quintet to the lowest score it has made so far this year. The Varsity Summary:   G  F  P Gabler  1  1  3 Crosby  4  0  8 Rockwell  3  2  8 Smith  4  2  10 Stevenson  0  1  1 Prior  2  1  5 Hickey  2  0  4 Covey  2  1  5 Murphy  2  1  5 Stiles  2  0  4   22  9  53
