Track Team Will Meet BU, Northeastern Today

Mikkola Squad Makes Debut in Informal Affair at Briggs; Fight Seen in Weight Event

Jaakko Mikkola's varsity track squad will make its first full-dress appearance as a unit this afternoon when it meets Boston University and Northeastern in an informal meet in Briggs Cage. Field events start at 1 p.m. and running events at 3 p.m. Scores will not be kept.

The Crimson will display a more balgneed team this year than last year when the core of the strength lay in the weight events. While the team has lost some power in this department due to graduation that loss is more than made up by the addition of a good group of sophomores to the running squad. This department will be strengthened immeasurably over last year's.

BU's squad is strong and liberally studded with stars this year. Northeastern boasts several outstanding performers, but its overall strength is questionable.

Competition between the Crimson and BU should be keen in almost all events and especially in the 600 yard run, the 1/4-mile run, the broad jump, and the 35 pound weight throw.

BU's Dud O'Leary, who ran a 48.1 quarter last year and who is prominently incalioned for the '52 Olympics, will be matched against Harvard's Harvey Thayer, Jack Ellis, Tom McGrath, and Ron Berman in the 600.

The weight throw will see BU's Irving Black and James Lang pitted against Crimson captain Geoff Tootell and Dick Rubin. BU's entries have both thrown farther than Tootell or Rubin, but were beaten by both these men in a weight throwing meet held here last week.

A Northeastern broad jumping and high jumping star named Mazzocca will give strong BU and Harvard entries a hard time in these events.
