The Francis H. Burr Scholarship, awarded annually to a senior "who combines the qualities of character, leadership, scholarship, and ability, has been split this year between football players Howie Houston (above) and Paul Shafer.
The selection is made annualy to a major H winner by H.A.A. Director William J. Bingham '16 and Dean Bender. Although a needy athlete will receive money from the award, Dean Bender explained yesterday that its purpose was to honor, not to subsidize.
"The award is made in a student's final year," Bender said, "and not before he comes to college."
The fund was established in 1913 by friends of Burr, an outstanding athlete, 'scholar, and student leader. Previous recipients have included John P. Chase '28, now coach of the hockey team, all-American Barry Wood '32, and Paul Knapluth '49, last year's crew captain.
