Sisyphus was the fellow who spent all his time in Hades pushing a huge rock up a hill only to have it rill down gain as soon as he reached the top.
Coach Henry Lamar of the freshman football team is Sisyphus in modern dress.

Lamar used the T-formation, but because he likes it, but because practically all of the Varsity's opponents are T teams, and Valey uses the workhorse freshmen to simulate these offensives so he can devise defences.
More Time for Varsity

Assets to the Freshmen are an inside man from last year's Andover team (Andover can hardly know anything about Harvard since Lamar scarcely does), two left-handed quarterbacks (which may or may not be significant), a pretty heavy line ("its still fairly fat, though"), and far rower injuries than might be expected from a week of battering from the varsity. The team also boasts a probable fullback starter named Blitz.
