Jayvees Lick Green, 6-0, For first Football Victory

By Pete Taub

The junior varsity scored once against Dartmouth here yesterday. That was all it took to stop the Indian jayvees, 6 to 0, and thus gain Harvard's first major football victory of the season.

The game's only touchdown came just four minutes and five seconds before the final whistle. Dartmouth's Don Wagner had intercepted a Dusty Burke pass on the Green 48-yard line and the visitors moved to the Crimson 25 before a bad pitch-out stalled the drive.

On fourth down, with 12 yards to go for a first down. Dartmouth elected to run. A plunge through the middle picked up about five yards and Harvard took over on its own 35.

Dune Mauran, who was held to short gains all afternoon, made five yards through the center of the line and on the next play Slug Dolan cut off tackle--out side his right tackle, inside the end--broke to his left when he got into the Dartmouth secondary, and spurted 60 yards behind three blockers. Hugh Edmonds' place-kick for the extra point drifted wide of the uprights.

Neither team was able to produce a scoring threat. Dartmouth fell on Farren Wylie's fumble on the Crimson 17 as the second quarter opened, but Harvard recovered on the very next play. Later in the same period, the Indians started a drive from their own 31 which petered out on the Harvard 8. The losers' had a 60-yard touchdown run in the third period nullified for offside.

Red Lewis played a fine game backing up the Crimson line and this forced Dartmouth to take to the air. The Indians' passing was far from adequate. Their most effective play was a delayed buck by the fullback.

The locals were unsuccessful through the middle of the line and Burke's passing was only good in spots. Burke left the game in the fourth period with a possible concussion and Don Kaderabek, a guard, suffered a broken hand.
