Winthrop made it two for two yesterday afternoon by beating Leverett House 12-6 in House football on Soldiers Field. Kirkland entered the win column by edging Dudley 7-0.
The play of the afternoon was a neatly-executed pitch-out from the Winthrop quarterback to Leverett and Guil Brown, who raced 70 yards for the lone Bunny score. Except for this stunt the Puritans played a steady ball game. Quarterback Dick Couch used straight power plays to take advantage of Leverett's aggressive but out-weighed line.
This strategy scored Frank Hernberg on a 20-yard run after a 40-yard opening game march. Thorpe Kelly's interception set up the second Puritan touchdown, a ten-yard sprint by Pete Brooke.
Lowell Shows Poise
Leverett showed a lot more poise against Winthrop than in the Eliot debacle last week. The Bunnies had a polished offense with some fine running by Jim Wyckoff and Fabian Bradbury.
The Kirkland-Dudley contest was an unspectacular battle of defenses. Kirkland's vaunted power attack picked up a lot of short gains but got off only one long run. After a see-saw first half the Deacons finally punched their way to the 20, where a Lamb-to-Bixby pass registered the score.
Dudley Uses T
Dudley's quick-opening T attack reeled off considerable yardage around the ends but begged down in scoring territory. The Commuters tried to open the game up with a passing attack, but Kirkland's.
Except for the Deacons' one scoring drive, Dudley kept the Kirkland backs successfully bottled up. The Commuter backerups were usually able to rig an effective defense against Kirkland's single wing plays.
Today's Games
Adams' powerful squad, which crushed Lowell in its opener, faces once-beaten Dunster this afternoon. The Gold Coasters have one of the heaviest lines in House football which, combined with an effective single wing attack, should prove too much for the Funsters.
Eliot faces Lowell in another game today. The Elephants have a flashy backfield of T operatives and a big line which pummeled Leverett 26-6. Lowell has some capable backs and an equally heavy line, but they didn't click as a team against Adams. Eliot will be favored to Jcia. Winthrop in the "two straight" ranks.
Both games will start at 3:15 on Soldiers Field.
