Yardlings Fall Before Purple Quintet, 68-34

Holy Cross has attracted a lot of good basketball material this year, and yesterday the Crimson freshmen found out just how good the '52 crop is. The Crusader freshmen plowed the Yardlings under, 68 to 34, at the Boston Arena yesterday afternoon.

Averaging 6 ft. 4 in. to Harvard's 5 ft. 10 in., Holy Cross outplayed the Crimson throughout the game by its ability to control both boards. With some of their top men on the injured list, the Yardlings played a listless game, and it showed in their defensive work.

Downey Leads Crimson

Jim Downey was the Crimson's high scorer of the afternoon with 11 points, and Jerry Murphy and Red Barry scored seven and six points apiece.

At halftime Holy Cross was ahead only 25 to 15, but the Crimson's spark-plug Captain Bill Hickey fouled out just before the first half. From then on the Holy Cross giants never were challenged. The tall Crusaders set up a strong defense around the boards and Harvard could only shoot from the outside.

Stevenson Covered

Jim Stevenson, who was the big gun in the Trinity victory, was blanketed by his 6 ft. 6 in. defense man and only scored one point. The rest of the team also ran into a tight wall and were battered under the boards.

Holy Cross's Bill Brill and 6 ft., 6 in. Charlie Hammill were the best ball handlers and tallied up 14 points each. Fred Difenbach, another top player, made two baskets.
