Columbia's baseball team is nestling right beside the Crimson in the cellar of the Eastern League this morning. By nightfall, one of the two will be all alone, for Dolph Samborski's nine opens its two-game weekend trip at Morningside Heights this afternoon. Army will furnish tomorrow's fare.
Both squads in today's game have records that are mediocre at best. Columbia, although reasonably successful against non-league opponents, has a combined total of five wins and four losses; and the Crimson, currently mired in a four-game losing streak, can show only five wins in 13 starts.
Ira Godin, whose capable pitching is responsible for three of the victories, will start today, while Red Connolly muses on the West Point batting power he must confront tomorrow. Opposing Godin will be Bob Swanson, who silenced those same Army hitters last week to help his team win, 2 to 1, over the Point.
Samborski, who shook up his order Tuesday to good advantage, will probably use the same lineup that started the game against Dartmouth. Myles Huntington, who celebrated his elevation to leadoff man by whacking a home run, will again start things off. Chip Gannon, Cliff Crosby--still at shortstop--, Walt Coulson, and John Caulfield follow with most of the batting punch.
