Five hits, plus an awesome display of bobbling by the Middlebury team, permitted the Varsity baseball team to score seven times in the eighth inning to win its first game in four starts by the score of 8 to 5. Until the eighth Bill Confrey, the small-sized Middlebury hurler, held the Crimson to three bits on the Soldiers Field diamond Saturday.
Big Ralph Hymans emerged as the winning pitcher after taking over from Ira Godin in the first of the eighth and striking out five of the six men he faced to protect the Crimson's ill-gotten lead.
The Vermonters, apparently used to the chilly weather, started scoring early, tagging Godin for one run in each of the second, third, and fifth innings, as well as two in the fourth. Meanwhile, Armie Essayan, who caught so that regular catcher Cliff Crosby could replace injured Ernie Mannino at short, slapped a double in the third to produce one Harvard run.
Godin struck out six and walked three during his seven innings on the mound while giving up all four of the losers' hits.
The summary:
*Popped out for Godin in 7th.
