Denied Winter Campus Housing, International Students Scramble to Find Alternative Options
No Hollywood thriller-writer could have staged a more exciting performance than the Varsity hockey team's 1 to 0 shutout of Yale at the Arena Saturday night. The incredible goal-tending of Jack Lavalle and Eli Jimmy Burns, combined with the gruelling attacks of both teams and the razor-thin margin of victory, kept 3,170 fans on the verge of a nervous breakdown right down to the final whistle.
Sophomore center Larry Ward handled the entire scoring with a shot past the prostrate Burns at 12.18 of the second period after a prolonged scrimmage in front of the nets. But Crimson Captain Jack Lavalle was the real hero of the occasion, stopping a rain of fire that made the Battle of the Bulge look like a minor skirmish.
Yale Defensee Strong
Eli defenses were almost as airtight. Time and time again Crimson attacks were foiled by alert man-to-man defense, which--appropriately enough--covered its opponents with bulldog tenacity.
The Yale and Harvard hockey teams, their home-and-home series tied, will meet in a third contest at the New Haven Arena Wednesday, it was announced last night by the Yale Athletic Association.
But when they failed, goalie Burns seemed to be everywhere at once, blocking shots that in any other contest this year would have enabled the Crimson to run up an unlimited score.
All three forward lines outdid themselves in speed and effectiveness, giving back more than they took from the somewhat over-physical Elis. Play was rugged all the way, with 15 penalties dished out by the scrupulous referee.
That worthy was chased from the ice at game's end beneath a barrage of beer cans from the arrogant faus for his efforts, which were a bit dubious from Harvard's point of view.
But the really great defensive work of Dick Greeley and his associates saved the cause while Harvard was shorthanded. Lavalle get the best aid any Crimson goalie has received all year.
The summary:
Harvard Alternates: Arnold, A. Key, Abbot, Minot, Sears, Allen, Ward, Huntington, Chase, Yetman, Wood.
Yale Alternates: Allen, Calboun, Soper, Clapp, Guernsey, Armour, Read, Van Dyke.
Scoring, Second Period: Ward (Minot, Sears) 12:18.
