Close victories by Winthrop and Dudley initiated the second round of the inter-House basketball circuit last night in the Blockhouse, with the Puritans eking out a 42 to 36 win over Kirkland, and the Commuters catching Eliot from behind in the last minutes of play for a 41 to 39 triumph.
Kirkland's quintet matched Winthrop, undefeated league leaders of the first round, basket for basket in the first two cantos of play. The Deacons, however with cellar honors in their first seven games, fizzled out against the Puritans' steady play in the last quarter.
Dudley's edging of Eliot was an upset. The finally vanquished Mastodons led 23 to 14 at the half, dropped to a one point lead at the three-quarter mark and fell behind for the first time in the last minute of play.
