Denied Winter Campus Housing, International Students Scramble to Find Alternative Options
Basketball coach Bill Barclay made his first out this week, paring the Varsity squad to 20 men. "We'll make one more cut," Barclay disclosed, "after the football season ends and we've had a chance to look at some of the men reporting from Art Valpey's squad."
These players include hoop captain Chip Gannon, now operating at fullback for Valpey; quarterback Bill Henry; and tailback Jim Kenary. The Crimson which opens against Brown at Providence on December 4, is now practicing five days a week. Coach Harclay isn't around on the weekends, since he has been scouting for Art Valpey this fall, and is now taking notes on Yale.
Going Slow
"We're not trying to progress as fast as we did last year," Barclay reports. "Since there's no Jayvee team, we let everybody who wanted to play basketball come out for the team. We're trying a new combination each day."
Regardless of what combination starts the opening game, it's likely that the Varsity frontline will have plenty of height. Sophomore Ed Smith, probable forward, stands six-six, center Bill Prior is six-five, and forward John "Rock" Rockwell hits six-four.
