Band May Serenade Stanford in '49

It's 3,500 miles and $17,000 to Pale Alto, California, but the Band may be playing there come next September 24 and The Harvard-Stanford football game.

The project, which would take the island across the Mississippi for the first time in its history, is still definitely in the embryo stage, however, according to Manager Paul Finney '50, No action will be taken on the project until a committee can be organized to examine the pros and cons of the situation and make a report.

The committee will probably not convene until the middle of December, so definite action may be delayed until just before Christmas.

Alumni Would Pay

The $15,000 to $20,000 needed to take care of even the skeleton 80-man crew planned for the trip, will have to be collected from Harvard Clubs and graduates throughout the nation. To make up some of this sum the Band may play to Harvard Clubs in San Francisco and, on the way back, Chicago.

The least of the Band's problems will be that of manpower. Although the usual 30 incoming freshman members will not be available for the pre-registeration jaunt, there will be no difficulty filling the 80 slots, which are well below the football season par of 130. In a pinch graduate members can be used, according to Band tradition.

Regardless of whether it goes to Stanford, the Band definitely will make trips to the other away games next fall, at Columbia, on November 1, and Yale at the end of the season.
