A plea from Radcliffe's 20 Walker st. for a basement smoker and recreation room got a financial "thumbsdown" from Radcliffe Building and grounds superintendent, T. Dawson Blamire yesterday.
"It's too expensive" Blamire said. "Fire inspection rules require steel fire doors, and we'd have to plaster the basement ceiling." As estimated, one fire door would cost about $65.
According to Blamire, no measure have been taken as yet to provide some for of smoker for the 28 residents. "Why can't they smoke in the kitchen?" he said. "It's ventilated."
