Following the system established last year of quartering overflow newcomers on the basketball floor of the Indoor Athletic Building, 122 Freshmen and returnees were bedded down in the emergency dormitory last Wednesday night, and by last night the crowed totalled close to 180, which officials estimated as the peak load.
Typical of those packed G.I. style into the gym are William Gribble '49 and Ed Scherick '51, shown above speculating on their chances of obtaining regular accommodations in the near future.
On Friday evening 176 men had checked in end beds, both single and double-dock, covered on-third to the gym floor and field both the balconies. College housing authorities are now preparing to find permanent quarters for the overflow as quickly as possible.
Last year less than 40 men were housed in the Indoor Athletic Building and places were found for all of them within two weeks. Dan H. Fenn, Jr. '44, assistant dean of Freshmen, expects to get the gym dwellers settled by October 20 this year.
