Faculty approval for the latest in a long list of undergraduate political organizations was granted yesterday as the Harvard Youth for Democracy received a green light from University Hall.
Originally the new group had attempted to organize a local branch of the American Youth for Democracy, but College regulations forbidding control by any national or other non-Harvard activity caused creation of the new organization, which has agreed to remain completely autonomous.
Provost Buck, in commenting upon the recent action, stated: "We have granted permission for the formation of Harvard Youth for Democracy under this University's traditional policy of a free exchange of opinion within the student body as well as its Faculty.
Left and Right Support
"We are aware of statements which have been made about communist influence in the American Youth for Democracy. Our policy, however, is based on a faith in the ability of the American form of government to prove its value in a free market of ideas."
Both left and right wing among College political groups supported the creation of the infant organization, with the HLU and the Republican Open Forum issuing statements that they hoped that in this way AYD sympathizers would be easily recognizable, rather than be carrying on a sub rosa existence.
Temporary officers of the HYD include Henry A. Mendelsohn '48, president; Lazare Nesin '48, vice-president; and Sydney V. James '50, secretary. The group claims a total membership of twenty-six undergraduates, approximately one-half of of one percent of the student body.
