Crimson Entry Unable to Finish; Wellesley Authorities Deny Foul Play a Factor

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

"Where's my dress?" said Ellen Carol Van Deusen, Wellesley '47, after booting home a winner in yesterday morning's sixty-ninth running of the traditional Waban Hoop Race for maritally minded females.

Before shapely seconds rushed up with the garment, she posed a few in a pair of fetching scarlet trunks, and played it safe when asked about who the man in her life was. She gave even the darkest horse a sporting chance, so as "not to hurt anyone's feelings."

"I want to work a few years," added the blondish, 21 (but looks younger) New Jersian as she received the floral wreath in the winner's circle, amid flash bulbs and applause.

But the big news in the furlong free-for-all for a field of 150 was the upset of CRIMSON-backed Mary Ross, also Wellesley '47. Reported a sure winner at post time, the petite but spirited blend speedster was last seen in the stretch just short of the treacherous Chapel turn, running easily and widening a big lead. Rumors of foul play were quickly squelched by the Wellesley publicity offices, but the Cambridge daily had its best men conducting a Waban-wide search last night for suspicious circumstances in the shadows of Tower Court.

Best lead so far was a sinister group of female students who were seen on a neighboring hillside after the race signalling with colored blotters to accomplices in the valley below.

Yesterday's Chart at Waban

HOOP RACE--Purse, one hundred added; for senior maidens: one furlong. Start, jumbled; won, driving: place, faltering. Post 7:15 Winner, blond, by Sheer Drive out of Desperation. Trainer Mac Horton.

Van Dusen opened slow moved up at the far turn, and finished driving to win going away. Ross, away fast showed good speed and led all the way running easily at the three-quarter until fonied from behind. Tinker first visibly in the stretch and never even not out of the each. Feiris and showed nothing.
